    International Day for Judicial Wellbeing

    WATCH INTERVIEW ON TIKTOK

DNI Africa conducts a legal awareness program at the Federal High Court of Justice for The International Day for Judicial Wellbeing. Today is a reminder that justice is not only about laws and courts but also about the people who uphold them.

On this day, DNI Africa conducted a legal awareness program that brought to light the pressing issue of mental health among lawyers and judges in Nigeria. Through interviews with three lawyers, the program revealed how the wellbeing of legal professionals is consistently overlooked, despite the immense pressures they face in their daily work.

The lawyers spoke candidly about the toll that endless caseloads and long hours take on their mental health. They emphasized that judges, in particular, are burdened with a staggering number of cases, often far beyond what any individual can reasonably manage. This overload not only affects their psychological wellbeing but also compromises the quality of justice delivered. A judge who is mentally exhausted is more prone to errors, delays, and decisions that may not fully reflect the fairness and integrity expected of the judiciary.

The neglect of judicial wellbeing in Nigeria is symptomatic of a larger systemic problem. With too few judges handling thousands of cases, the judiciary is stretched thin, and the human cost of this imbalance is rarely acknowledged. The lawyers interviewed by DNI Africa called for urgent reforms: increasing judicial appointments, adopting modern case management systems, and creating institutional support for mental health. They argued that judicial wellbeing is not a luxury but a necessity for the independence and effectiveness of the justice system.

The health of the judiciary directly impacts the delivery of justice. When judges and lawyers are supported, they are better equipped to uphold the rule of law and protect citizens’ rights. By recognizing and addressing the mental health needs of legal professionals, Nigeria can strengthen its judiciary and ensure that justice is delivered fairly and efficiently.

The International Day for Judicial Wellbeing is therefore not just symbolic, it is a call to action for policymakers, institutions, and society to prioritize the wellbeing of those who safeguard justice.
